Project objectives:

The Else Kröner Center for Cancer Care in Ethiopia  works to improve early detection, care and support for patients with breast and cervical cancer in Ethiopia.

Despite great progress in improving cancer screening and care over the past decade, Ethiopia has an increasing number of women with cancer. Mortality rates are high. Providing health care services to the growing number of women who have cervical and breast cancers is becoming an important challenge for clinical facilities, public health services, and society in Ethiopia. The country's only comprehensive oncology center at Addis Ababa University (AAU) is massively overloaded, has very long waiting times, and is unable to meet the needs of the entire country.

Therefore, the main objective of this project is to improve and expand oncology services for women in Ethiopia by supporting selected interventions based on the findings of our previous research in our Addis-Halle collaboration.

Additional sub-goals and key activities are:

  1. Guidelines: Walk-in diagnostic and treatment service Churchill Health Centre
  2. Capacity building: CME and capacity building for peripheral sites.
  3. Early detection: improve and establish an interface between screening and early detection.
  4. Referral system expansion: Fast referral from 8 mid-level hospitals
  5. Survivorship care: Improve survivorship care in the community
