Zelalem Desalegn Woldesonbet: A PhD student with a passion for medicine and culture

Zelalem Desalegn Woldesonbet is not only a dedicated PhD student in medical microbiology, but also a personality with a multi-faceted life story. Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Zelalem has a deep connection to his hometown and its culture.

In his spare time, the 36-year-old is a history and culture buff. He enjoys spending time exploring historical sites in Ethiopia and researching the history of his country. His love of culture is also evident in his enthusiasm for traditional Ethiopian music and art, which he considers an important part of his identity.

What makes Zelalem stand out is his commitment to society. He strives to have a positive impact on medical care in Ethiopia and beyond through his research and professional career. His passion for cancer research extends beyond laboratory work and is expressed in his desire to improve the lives of people in Ethiopia.

Currently, the microbiologist is in Halle, Germany for two months to conduct his PhD research in medical microbiology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). He is collecting data, analyzing samples and conducting experiments to contribute to breast cancer research. Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg offers modern research facilities that allow him to continue his studies at a high level. His research project is part of an international cooperation project between his Ethiopian university and Martin Luther University in Halle. His research stay is financed by PAGEL.
