The scientists at the Institute for History and Ethics of Medicine cover a broad spectrum of topics in health care ethics, theories of science, and historical issues in medicine and further health professions as part of their research. The scientific work is often carried out in interdisciplinary collaborations and using empirical and normative methods. Depending on the research question and methodology, the research projects involve participatory research methods.

Next to research our "Clinical Ethic Teams" offers various forms of ethical case consultation and other support services. These services are continuously evaluated in collaboration with the Clinical Ethics Committee at University Hospital Halle.

With regards to teaching we offer courses on the basics of medical ethics, medical theory and the history of medicine for students of medicine and dentistry. Theoretical and practical courses cover topics of professionalism and interprofessional collaboration. Furthermore we offer teaching courses to students of health and nursing sciences, midwifery sciences, and as part of the master's program in medicine-ethics-law.
